Target Audience: This in-person training is intended for public health nurses, nurse case managers, nurse educators, and other healthcare professionals who want to bring best practices in sputum collection and induction to their colleagues and patients.
Topics Covered Include (partial list):
- general importance of sputum for monitoring and diagnosis
- lab considerations for good/usable sputum specimens
- spontaneous sputum collection
- sputum induction in the clinic and field
- safety and infection control
- coaching patients and troubleshooting when patients can't expectorate
- pediatric sputum induction and gastric aspirates
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- identify resources to learn best practices for collecting sputum samples to safely guide clinical practice
- describe the efficacy and safety of sputum induction in tuberculosis (TB) care for improved diagnosis of TB
- describe indications and contraindications for sputum induction and understand precautions to consider before performing sputum induction to improve procedure safety
- describe some tips and tricks to attempt when an individual (adult or child) is unable to collect spontaneous sputum
- identify criteria that will reject a sputum specimen from processing to improve understanding of usable sputum samples
Training Format: This in-person training includes lectures, hands-on demonstrations, discussion, and Q&A.
