Target Audience: This webinar is intended for all public health personnel and healthcare providers who are responsible for collecting demographic data. This includes case managers, community health workers, disease intervention specialists, epidemiologists, health outreach workers, nurses, tuberculosis (TB) program managers, and surveillance staff at local health jurisdictions. This training opportunity is available to a national audience.
Description: Asking personal demographic questions, specifically around sexual orientation, gender identity, and race/ethnicity, can be challenging. However, collecting this information from our patients/clients is vital to inform an equitable distribution of health resources in our communities. This webinar will focus on the demographic questions asked on the Report of Verified Case of Tuberculosis (RVCT) and provide strategies for how to become more comfortable asking these and other sensitive questions during interviews.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- describe how accurately collecting demographic data for surveillance reporting (e.g. RVCT) supports health equity in communities
- identify 3 strategies to use while asking sensitive questions to support comprehensive data collection
- describe the HEAR technique to support de-escalation during emotional or challenging conversations
